Well with thoughts of cancelling swirling in my head, the crazy side of me won out and six of us, all who were just as crazy as me, set out on a rainy, windy, crappy night for a bird walk. while hiding in the lee of where ever we could, we managed to come up with 36 species for the evening! List as follows; Green Heron, Canada Geese, Mute Swan, Wood Duck,Osprey, Killdeer, Ring-Billed Gull, Least Tern,Mourning Dove,Belted Kingfisher,Eastern Kingird,American Crow,Purple Martin,Tree Swallow, Bank Swallow, Barn Swallows at very close range, Black capped Chickadee, Hermit Thrush, American Robin, Grey Catbird, Northern Mockingbird, Starling, Cedar Waxwing,Yellow Warbler,Pine Warbler, Prairie Warbler, Common Yellowthroat,Eastern Towhee, Chipping Sparrow,Song Sparrow,Bobolink, Red Winged Blackbird, Common Grackle,Baltimore Oriole,American Goldfinch, and finally a very co-operative Whip-poor Will that sang at close range and we were able to put a flashlight on it and get a red reflection from its eye. So all in all in what was challengeing wind and rain we were rewarded by the single Whip-poor Will and the long standing record of hearing and or seeing Whip-poor Wills still stands! North American Bird Watch open at the Bay Club

Well in spite of an otherwise typical May crappy day here on the coast, we had 57 species for the North American Bird Watching Open. An impromptu walk this a.m. on the chance that last night's cold front would bring a number of migrants proved to be less than expected. We had the following, Peregrine and Merlin, Whimbrel, several Loon flyovers, Indigo Bunting, Song Sparrow, Towhee, Common Yellowthroats, Red Breasted Nuthatch, Tree Swallows, Turnstones,House Wren, Cat birds, large flock of Cormorants with cool flight behavior Palm Warblers and a number of chilly Monarchs. Cold, 30s', drizzly. Had the day off and went to all my spots.
Long Road--Pine Warbler having a territory skirmish with Yellow-Rumped Warbler.
Nothing at Shaw Road.
YMCA bridge -- Several Osprey fishing, group of all ages of Great Black-backed Gulls, Cormorants, Great Blue Herons.
Winsegansett -- Heard a big Oystercatcher racket going on. There were two pairs of them doing their piping tournament thing, squawking and flying in unison.
Thought I saw Snowy Owl, but turned out to be Great Egret. Lots of Dunlin, but no more Horned Larks.

Lots of goldfinches and house finches on the feeders today because of the rain. YELLOW

Beautiful weather - sunny 50s. After work went to Shaw Road. In the field at the curve, there were Canada Geese, noisy Killdeer, Robins, RW Blackbirds and a small flock of Snipe.

Winsegansett--tide too high to hike...saw 2 AMOY napping near the pond in front of Lou's house....almost joined to the sea.

TONS of robins in every yard and field. Some lawns so flooded they got Mallards.

Walked rail trail from Shaw Road to YMCA. Lots of Golden-crowned Kinglets, at the bridge saw Hooded and RB Mergansers, Grebes, startled a Great Blue Heron.

Mill Road--just Mallards and one Mute Swan.

In the evening went to Shaw Road. Saw Greater White-fronted Goose at the bend with the Canadas. Lots of Woodcock displaying in the big yards near the bike path. Heard a Killdeer

Winsegansett for SEANET
Calm, 40s. When I started it had just stopped drizzling and there was 100% cloud cover and fog coming off the ice.
By the time I finished it was sunny and almost cloudless.
41 Brant, 23 Herring Gulls, 2 Black Ducks, 27 Common Eider, 1 Common Loon, 2 Red-breasted Merganser, 6 Dunlin, 1 Killdeer, 12 Horned Larks, 1 American Pipit, 2 House Finch, 2 Song Sparrows, 6 Mallards, 3 Yellow-rumped Warblers.
As I rushed to get back before the incoming tide made the inlets too deep, ran into a Snowy Owl. It stayed a long time before buzzing me on its way to the marsh.

Single digits, VERY windy. Probably the coldest day of the winter when you factor in wind chill.
A large bird flew to the branch above my office bird feeder...thought it was a pigeon out of the corner of my eye, but when I turned and looked it was a large hawk. I hoped it was the church falcon from last year, but after I put on my glasses I saw that it was a very large Cooper's. It looked in at me but was nonplussed.

Walked down RR bed from Shaw Road to YMCA. Best birds at RR bridge. Two Turkey Vultures together, Red-breasted and Hooded Mergansers, Buffleheads battling both above and below the water. G. Black-backed gulls. A pair of Canada Geese in the marsh. Horned Grebe.

Weather pretty nice. Went to Stony Point Dike in the morning. Not much in the way of birds, especially with my being followed by a Border Collie.

Late afternoon went to Tamarack to look for eagles (none) and a Red-throated Loon that Mike LaBossiere saw. Got some pictures of the loon.

Temps got up into high 30s. Still some ice...enough to skate on Mill Road pond.

Long Road had only a few of the regulars since there was a man and boy with 2 rambunctious dogs. I got dog snot all over my jacket and mittens.

At Mill Road lots of activity. Brown Creeper, lots of Chickadees and Titmice calling and threatening each other. A Chickadee kept going after a Golden-crowned Kinglet who was hawking and hovering since there were some bugs in the air. It also started a row with a Yellow-rumped Warbler. Crows, Flicker, Downy, Mallard, Black Duck.

YMCA railroad bridge. Mute Swans, Hooded Mergansers, Red-breasted Mergansers, Common Goldeneyes, Canada Geese. Heard Belted Kingfisher. Gulls.

Went with Lloyd Center on seal watch to Penikese. Bitterly cold and windy. Couldn't get close enough to seals for pictures unlike last year. But saw different places on the island too.

Bitterly cold with strong winds, but sunny.

Went to Weeden Road and walked around the bike path. Saw lots of ducks, mostly Mallards and Black Ducks, but about 6 female Hooded Mergansers and one male.

Then went to Mill Road. Just a few starlings.

Walked around Tinkham Pond a little...just Mallards.

After lunch spent 3 hours with Bill looking for eagles in Lakeville and Middleboro. Went to Tamarack, the Assawompsett School, the causeway near Island Terrace. Then at the causeway near the waterworks walked into the woods about 10 minutes and spotted the eagles far off. Drove to the intersection and walked about half an hour and crossed the causeway in the woods to an island. Finally saw two adult eagles putting on a display.

Spent several hours at Long Road, exploring paths that will be too muddy in a few weeks. Lots of chickadees and nuthatches. Saw a WB nuthatch giving a tidbit to another. Very cute. Spring is almost here.

Bill went alone to Quitticas and put out a road killed Mallard on the ice. A Bald Eagle was interested, but saw Bill and didn't come down for it.

Went to Tamarack and hung around for about an hour--no eagles.....only one Common Merganser and a lot of Great Black-backed Gulls and one Mute Swan.
Went to Mill Road. A LOT of Canada Geese in the soccer fields.
Backyard birds. Only one or two Robins in the bath all day so the flock must have moved on. Flicker and downy on suet. Carolina Wren. Half dozen cardinals. Usual jays, juncos, white-throated sparrows. House Sparrows. Starlings bathing. Goldfinch on every perch. Bill told me he saw a blind House Finch yesterday.
Around 3 went back with Bill to Lakeville walked through brush and sat to watch 3 Bald Eagles and at least 2 Red-tailed Hawks. Hawks seemed to be courting.

Did Winsegansett and Town Beach. Very cold, but not much wind.
Saw one Pipit at Winsegansett.

Lots of Eider at Town Beach. Heard hunters playing a tape of crow in distress. Three real crows rushed to its aid, and were met with a volley of gunfire. One crow dropped. Guess they can hunt the uneatable innocuous intelligent birds on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Made me sick....and hunters are always claiming they don't kill for the thrill.

In Matt at the RR Bridge there were tons of Canada Geese--two flocks flew over at right angles and intersected each other flawlessly and without a single bump. Saw Hooded Mergansers, Common Goldeneye and Great Black-backed Gulls. Heard a Kingfisher. At the Matt. River on River Road there was a female Bufflehead with the Mallards

At home the yard was mobbed and just as I settled down to watch, the Cooper's Hawk swooped down and took a male Cardinal into the rhododendron. It was hard to see, but I watched it kill and pluck the bird then hop to a branch to eat it. Took a couple hours before it finally left. Didn't even leave the beak and feet!

The trip started this morning at 7:30 a.m. and our first stop was at Head of the Bay in Bourne and several Common Snipe were seen. We then made our way to the Railroad Bridge and then Scusett Beach. At the Fish Pier we were delighted to see approx. 8 Blue Birds at fairly close range. We then proceeded to the Parking area and found a large flock of Horned Larks. The canal was fairly quiet but we did get Purple Sandpiper, Common Eider, Great Cormorant, Common Loon, Surf Scoter, a dead White-winged Scoter, GREAT looks a Northern Harrier male, and an Accipiter species, likely Sharp shinned. We also had a visit by a rather large Grey Seal. Leaving Scusett we had a large 50+ flock of American Tree Sparrows. A quick look at the Herring Pond yielded Common Mergansers and Ringed Neck Ducks and a possible Red- throated Loon. Rounding out the day at the conservation area in Wareham we found a Pied- billed Grebe, Hooded Mergansers and American Wigeon.

Went at lunch time to Long Road. Saw a lot of healthy colorful House Finches, a flock of Tree Sparrows, and some Robins and Starlings arguing over a berry tree. Also saw a Red-tailed Hawk. Mallards were hiding in a huge puddle in the woods. Flickers and Downies.

TONS of birds, the usual ones.

After lunch went to Long Road -- again, tons of birds, mostly Tree Sparrow, goldies, Downies, Flickers and some Creepers. Lots of Carolina Wrens. All making lots of noise. Had a great time till my boot got stuck in the mud and I fell on my face. No damage.

Red-winged Blackbirds, very yellow Savannah Sparrows, small Cooper's Hawk, Song, White-throated, Swamp Sparrows, Mourning Doves, Chickdees and titmice, Carolina Wrens, Cardinals, Catbirds, Tree Sparrows.
Also found a homemade wooden trap.....took out apple bait and threw it into thickets.

Afternoon went to Lake Street in Acushnet to look for Bill's jacket and saw a flock of bluebirds. Also large flock of gulls on lake.

Nasketucket Bird Club count--Mike LaBossiere, Pam Perry and me (the crazy rainsoaked team)

Saturday, January 6 -- Several "intrepid????" birders split up into two teams and scoured some of the conservation areas in Mattapoisett. These included the Munn Property, Nasketucket State Reservation, Eel Pond, the Martocci Property and the landfill.

One team stayed dry and had lots of coffee, the other team, driven....er, led by Pres. Mike, got drenched.
